Dry ice - information

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2). Pellets, nuggets, slices and blocks of dry ice are produced in specialised equipment. The carbon dioxide expands first and subsequently soft powder is formed - snow CO2. This snow is forced through a special mould where it is pressed and densified and dry ice in the form of pellets or nuggets is created. The technology used to create blocks is slightly different.

Dry ice physical properties:

  • Temperature: - 78,8 ºC
  • Heat of sublimation: 640 kJ / kg (from -78 ºC to 0 ºC )
  • Density: 1,2 - 1,6 kg / dm3
  • Sublimates into gaseous CO2, 1 kg of dry ice = 541 litres of CO2
  • Odourless and flavourless
  • Non-poisonous
  • Non-flammable
  • Unbreathable
  • Limit in the air: 0.5 % of volume
  • Loss of consciousness: > 8 % of volume
